About Us
Hand-Built Timber. No Kits. Honest Value.
I’m Jason Kyte, founder of Ontario Outdoor Rooms.
I’ve been building heavy-timber structures for over a decade, and in that time I’ve learned what works — and what doesn’t.
We build bold, custom pergolas and pavilions from full-thickness, rough-sawn Douglas Fir — the way outdoor structures were meant to be made: solid, natural, and built to last.
Why We Build This Way
Stain fades fast on smooth, planed wood — that’s a fact.
When wood is run through a planer, the surface fibres close up and stain can’t soak in properly. That’s why we hand-sand every timber instead.
Our timbers are smooth to the touch — you won’t get splinters — but we leave a bit of natural texture so the wood can breathe and hold stain properly.
The edges are rounded, and every piece feels solid and real in your hands. You can actually feel the wood — the grain, the strength — and that’s what sets it apart from machine-finished lumber that fits in CNC machines.
What Sets Us Apart
- Custom, not kits. Built for your space — never mass-produced.
- Full-thickness Douglas Fir. Strong, stable, and proven for outdoor use.
- Hand-finished texture. Better stain absorption, longer life, and a natural feel.
- Better value. We buy direct, keep costs lean, and give you more structure for less than most timber kit builders.
- Straightforward approach. No gimmicks — just honest work that stands the test of time.
I don’t build for attention or social media — I build because I love it.
Being outside, working with my hands, and putting these structures together piece by piece is what keeps me doing this after all these years. Most of my clients become friends, and that’s what matters most.
