It’s strong, stable, and well suited to long-term exposure. The grain structure accepts finish well, allowing colour to hold and wear more evenly over time. As it weathers, the wood develops character instead of breaking down or looking washed out.
The result is a timber structure that looks refined on day one — and continues to look good as it ages.
Why Smooth, Planed Timber Fails Outdoors
When lumber is planed smooth, the cutting action compresses and partially closes the wood’s surface cells.
Instead of soaking in, stain and pigment sit on top of the wood, where sun and weather break them down quickly. The colour fades fast, and the surface needs frequent re-coating.
Rough-sawn Douglas fir retains its natural surface texture and open wood fibers. That texture allows stain to penetrate deeper into the timber, anchoring colour below the surface instead of leaving it exposed.
The result is a finish that:
- Holds colour longer
- Weathers gradually instead of peeling or blotching
- Looks better year after year
