At Ontario Outdoor Rooms, every structure is custom-built using substantial Douglas Fir timbers, carefully selected materials, and traditional craftsmanship.

The difference is in the timber
Real timber. Real texture.
Many timber-frame structures use smooth, machine-planed lumber. It is efficient to work with and creates a clean, uniform surface — a look particularly suited to interior timber framing.
We take a different approach outdoors. We start with rough-sawn, full-thickness Douglas Fir timbers. Each one is individually hand-sanded, and its edges are carefully eased. The result feels smooth and comfortable to the touch, yet retains the subtle ridges and natural texture of the sawn surface.
That texture does more than look beautiful. Compared with a tightly planed surface, textured timber absorbs more stain, allowing a deeper, richer finish with more surface for the coating to grip.
Our approach uses considerably more stain — sometimes roughly twice as much as smooth-planed timber in our experience — and far more time in preparation. We believe it's worth it for the distinctive character and beautiful outdoor weathering.

Two approaches to timber finishing. We choose the one that preserves the texture and substance we love in outdoor timber frames.
Smooth machine-planed timber
A precise, uniformly smooth surface that is quicker to prepare and generally uses less stain. It has less surface texture for an exterior finish to grip.
Our hand-sanded rough-sawn Douglas Fir
Comfortably softened by hand, with the subtle texture of the original sawn timber still present. More stain is absorbed, creating the rich, individual finish we want.

Full thickness means full thickness.
We use true-dimension heavy timbers. When a project calls for a 10-inch by 10-inch post, we mean a full 10″ × 10″ — not a smaller, planed-down finished size. You can see the substance in every post and beam.

A beautiful structure begins long before installation. From selecting each Douglas Fir timber to cutting the joinery, sanding the surfaces, easing the edges, and applying the finish, the work is carried out with care and attention.
We build our structures in-house rather than relying on mass-produced, prefabricated kits. Every project is designed for its setting, with strong timber connections, carefully considered proportions, and the structural character that makes heavy timber construction so distinctive.
